There are six foundational points to producing winning football on the offensive side. These six points are not a secret. As a matter of fact, they are in a lot of ways, boring. We as coaches, sometimes get caught up in the flashy schemes or new ideas or concepts, and we forget to take care of the foundational pieces of winning football.
You must have an athlete at quarterback. Having an athlete at quarterback, brings the entire Perfect Play Football system together. The quarterback should be a runner as well as a thrower. Your offense will explode when you force the defense to account for your quarterback as a runner.
Ball security. Ball security is job security. If I have an explosive runner, then I am very fortunate. I want a running back that can pass protect and can take care of the football. I will never trust a player that fumbles the ball to be a ball carrier. The same is true with my quarterback. If I’m going to use him as a runner, the quarterback must maintain ball security in the pocket when we throw the ball as well as a TD to interception ratio of 5:1 at a minimum.
Eliminate negative plays. Negative plays really hurt offenses at every level. It is very difficult to overcome third and long situation consistently in a game to keep the chains moving and keep your time of possession increasing.
Chunk plays. You must create plays with your offensive concepts. It is very difficult to consistently drive the ball down the field averaging three or 4 yards a play. You need to create those explosive or chunk plays to create your explosive offense. The perfect play football system creates chunk plays through read, pass concepts.
Score touchdowns in the red zone. Scoring in the red zone is important, but scoring touchdowns will lead to winning football. You cannot be satisfied with the field goal. Touchdowns are the key to success in the red zone. You must have a gameplan to score touchdowns in the red zone.
Your third down success rate should be as close to 50%. You must have success on third downs, and to guarantee success, you must be in manageable third down situations.
These six points will lead you to creating a successful offensive football team. You must have a plan for all six points, and these points must be emphasized to the players through drills and practice every day.
